Correlation between tympanic and rectal temperature in marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) under acute stress Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Boere,Vanner; Silva,Ita Oliveira; Canale,Gustavo; Pianta,Taíssa; Tomaz,Carlos.
In veterinary practice, tympanic temperature (TT) measurement is not very disseminated. It is surprising, because TT could have advantages compared to the rectal temperature (RT). In the present study, we investigate (Callithrix penicillata), right TT, left TT and RT. We used an infra-red thermometer to measure the temperature in marmosets of tympanic membrane, and a digital clinical thermometer for the measurement of rectal temperature. Right TT was lower than left TT and RT. There was not statistical difference between left TT and RT. Correlation between left TT and RT was stronger than correlation between right TT and both, left TT and RT. This results suggests of a regional thermal dissociation and an asymmetric cerebral metabolism and body...

First report of Gongylonema sp. in a free ranging callitrichid from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,A.R.; Souza,T.D.; Flecher,M.C.; Gardiner,C.H.; Santos,R.L..
ABSTRACT This is the first report of parasitism by Gongylonema sp. in a free-ranging callitrichid from the Atlantic forest of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A juvenile male of Geoffroy's marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi) was euthanized due to poor prognosis, then necropsied. Samples of the tongue were collected for routine histological processing. Microscopically, there were transversal sections of adult nematodes within the epithelial layer of the mucosa of the tongue. Lingual scraping demonstrated a small number of oval embryonated eggs with a thick capsule. The morphology of the adult parasites and the eggs, associated with its location, were compatible with the Spirurida nematode of the genus Gongylonema. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of...

Hematology and blood biochemistry in wild hybrid marmosets from the Atlantic Forest, Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Ita de Oliveira e; Silva,Fernanda de Fátima Rodrigues da; Fuzessy,Lisieux Franco; Tavela,Alexandre de Oliveira; Júnior,Moacir Carretta; Silva,Vinícius Herold Dornelas e; Paula,Tarcízio Antônio Rego de; Boere,Vanner.
This paper aims to describe the hematological and biochemical values of wild hybrid marmoset (Callithrix penicillata and C. geoffroyi) found in a forest zone of Southeastern Brazil. The marmosets were anaesthetized using ketamine and xylazine hydrochloride. Blood samples (0.5-1mL) were collected through the venipuncture of the femoral vein. Hematological and biochemical analyses were performed using automated counters and biochemical kits. The comparison for sex (adult males vs. adult females) and age class (juvenile vs. adult) physiological data and weight were analyzed through Student's t-test for independent samples. Significant differences between sex were observed in erythrocytes (P<0.01) and hemoglobin (P<0.05). The present study provides...

The distribution of presumptive thoracic paraganglionic tissue in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) BJMBR
Clarke,J.A.; Daly,M. de B..
The aortic-pulmonary regions (APR) of seven adult marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and the region of the right subclavian artery of a further three marmosets were diffusion-fixed with 10% buffered formol-saline solution. In both regions serial 5-µm sections were cut and stained by the Martius yellow, brilliant crystal scarlet and soluble blue method. Presumptive thoracic paraganglionic (PTP) tissue was only observed in the APR. PTP tissue was composed of small groups of cells that varied in size and number. The distribution of the groups of cells was extremely variable, so much so that it would be misleading to attempt to classify their position; they were not circumscribed by a connective tissue capsule, but were always related to the thoracic branches of...
